How To Make A Lattice Top Pie Crust
http://www.howdini.com/howdini-video-8435990.html
We thought lattice pie crusts required engineering or geometry skills, but it turns out all you really need is a ruler and nerves of steel 'til you get hang of it. Lauren Chattman from Pillsbury shows us the secret of how to make a gorgeous lattice top pie crust.
How to make a lattice pie crust
Traditional lattice weave
1. First, let the refrigerated pie crust soften on the counter for 15 minutes, so that its easy to work with. Then roll it out onto the countertop. It shouldnt be sticky, so no flour is needed.
2. Using a ruler, mark off the crust every ½ inch to ¾ of an inch.
3. Using the ruler marks as a guide, cut the pie crust into strips with a pairing knife.
4.Starting from the outside of the sliced pie crust, pick up one strip (the shortest one) and lay it down across one edge of the pie. Selecting every other strip, place them across the pie in one direction with a 1/2 space between each strip.
5. Now for the weaving part: The next set of strips will be facing perpendicular to the first set. Again start at the edge, and as you lay it across the pie, lift every other strip from the first set so the new strip goes over and under every other one. Continue this over and under pattern as you lay down the remaining strips across the pie.
6. Finish off the crust by rolling the edge under. If there are any overhanging pieces from these strips, you tuck them right in.
7. To scallop the edges, push your index finger in between two other fingers to get a crimped edge all the way around. Think push rather than pinch to get the best look.
8. Before baking, place a pie shield or aluminum foil strips on top of the pie crust edges to prevent burning. Remove them 15 minutes before the pie is finished.
Quick & Easy Lattice
A simpler alternative to the traditional lattice weave is to place every other strip across the pie in one direction, then place the remaining strips on top in the opposite direction. This way, you can save time by not weaving every strip. Once baked, the quick & easy lattice looks nearly as gorgeous as the traditional method.

my pie looked wonderful!i tried to make it look special for a birhday and it looked totally perfect.
I did the second version of this to my apple pie and it turned out wonderful! I think the second (easier) version looks just as nice and takes far less time. Maybe the first would be okay for a special occasion, but otherwise I would recommend version 2.
Thanks!
can i put something personal in? i saw it in a movie XD
This is a traditional German Bavarian Apple pie.
but you must first invent the universe.
She didn’t put egg wash on it. It’s always a nice finish to put egg wash on it and sprinkle some sugar or cinnamon sugar on top.
what? of course you can have a lattice top for any type of pie it is up to you
LOL Yeah, shes “a few fries short of a happy meal”
Can u have a lattice top pie crust for apple pie?
The weaved one looks really nice thumbs upfor dat one
that lady in the yellow is a dummy
one thing I dont rly like about this part of the howdini(the ppl) is b/c they use premade stuff, not from scratch
NOT a fan of the pre-made pie crust. To me, it has no flavor. Yick. However, this was educational, so thumbs up for that part. And a little tip to those who say they dont have enough time to bake a home made pie crust, make the dough the night before, then just take it out and roll the day you want it. Takes not even ten minutes to make it. ;] That’s usually what I do, cause between school and work, I have little time as well.
i noticed that the lattice top on the finished product isn’t really woven.
10 minutes if you’re half asleep, nearly blind and reading from a recipe….
I dunno why people buy so many heart clogging ‘timesaver’ foods. Try staying off your and away from the TV for ten minutes….
It’s not baking. It’s ‘heating’. Not to mention that their technique is horrible and they’re only doing the video to promote more fattening ‘lazy’ products.
“And in the tradition of cooking on camera, I have this” lol priceless. those came out beautifully! but the cherries kinda spilled out of the bked one eh
how about THANKS FOR THE DEMONSTRATION
jeez people do u hav to be so rude?! im sure they know how to make they’re own pie crust and if they had time they would. but no one wants to watch a 15 min video because they have to make a pie crust from scratch. also shes from pilsbury so shes just promoting their products. lay off!
Wow look at you two lovely “ladies” coming to Youtube and while watching “instructional videos” choose to alienate those who are actually here to learn something…very classy. You know who you are. SMH
cherry pie is yucky
yes
Right! Home made pie crust only takes about 10 minutes (or less) to make….
you have time for that in your life. good for you. some of us don’t with two jobs in an economy that is crushing people so when with what little time i have i want to do something special for the kids and hubby i can….because of time savers like this.
dont be so quick to judge
u r perfectly right … i dont know why people buy ready made things n call them that ohhh i baked that lolzzz. .. but i love to make things from scrach…i like ur comment…tashi…
